A new roof comes with two very different warranties. Understanding both protects your investment.
1. Manufacturer warranty (the materials)
This covers defects in the shingles themselves. Basic coverage is often limited, but with a certified installer you can register enhanced manufacturer warranties (for example, GAF's stronger system warranties) that cover materials for decades — and, at the top tiers, even the labor to fix a covered material issue.
2. Workmanship warranty (the installation)
This is the contractor's promise that the roof was installed correctly. It's arguably the more important one day-to-day, because most roof problems come from installation, not material defects. Ask exactly how long the workmanship warranty lasts and what it covers.
Why certification matters for warranties
The best manufacturer warranties are only available through certified contractors. An uncertified installer simply can't offer them — so the same shingles can carry very different protection depending on who installs them. This is a big reason to choose a GAF-certified roofer.
Questions to ask
- What manufacturer warranty tier am I getting, and will you register it?
- How long is your workmanship warranty?
- Is the warranty transferable if I sell the home? (Transferable warranties help resale.)
- What could void the warranty (e.g., poor ventilation, later DIY work)?
