Attic ventilation is the most overlooked part of a roof — and one of the biggest reasons roofs fail early in New Jersey. A properly vented roof lasts longer, lowers energy bills, and prevents moisture damage year-round.
How it works
Ventilation creates continuous airflow through the attic: cool air enters low (at the soffit/eaves) and hot, moist air exits high (at a ridge vent). That balanced intake-and-exhaust keeps the attic close to outdoor temperature and dry.
Why it matters in NJ
- Summer: an unvented attic can hit 150°F, baking your shingles from below (shortening their life) and driving up cooling bills.
- Winter: trapped warm, moist air causes condensation that rots decking and grows mold — and it's a leading cause of ice dams.
Warning signs of poor ventilation
- Hot, stuffy upstairs rooms and high energy bills
- Frost or moisture in the attic in winter
- Curling shingles or premature shingle wear
- Mold or musty smells in the attic
- Ice dams at the eaves each winter
The right fix
A balanced ridge-and-soffit system is the gold standard. When Lightning installs a roof, we evaluate your ventilation and correct it as part of the job — it's built into doing the work right, not an upsell. Many manufacturer warranties (including GAF) actually require proper ventilation to stay valid.
Getting a new roof is the perfect time to fix ventilation for good. Book a free inspection and we'll check yours.
